Straight Sword

straight sword 4.jpg

The Straight Sword (Ji'en) is a light weight double edged weapon,

and traditionally was the weapon of the military leaders and  educated classes unlike the Sabre which was for the common soldier.  The effectiveness of the Ji'en comes from the speed and accuracy of the practitioner and as such  requires many hours of practice to master even the basics.

The straight sword is taught only after the Sabre form has been completed.

The first form taught is a Tai Chi one and so builds on what was learnt when training with the Sabre, the second is a two man form which will necessarily improve the timing and precision that this weapon needs.

There is now also the option to learn a Mantis style straight sword form which Ben Mercer learnt from Grand Master Lee Kam Wing of Seven Star Mantis in 2010.

White Cloud Tai Chi Straight Sword Form

As mentioned above the straight sword was the weapon of the educated classes and to reflect this, it is the only form in the White Cloud syllabus where students are expected for learn and understand the names of each posture.

San Cai Ji'en - Two Man Straight Sword Form

The second form is the two man form San Cai Ji'en.

The form is taught in a way that requires each practitioner to react and adapt to their partners actions, making accuracy and timing essential components of this practice.
